HOW THE ANSWER IS BUILT
  1. 01

    The file is checked

We look inside the image for the GPS coordinates the camera wrote there, along with the capture time and the camera model.

  2. 02

    The scene is read

With no coordinates to use, a vision model studies the whole frame — street furniture, signage, architecture, weather, terrain.

  3. 03

    The place comes back

You get a place name, a latitude and longitude, and the specific clues the answer was based on.

TWO ROUTES TO ONE ANSWER

Two ways we work out where a photo was taken

One reads what the camera already recorded. The other works the place out from what the picture shows. The first is always tried first.

The GPS record inside your photo

Phones and cameras write coordinates into the image file itself. When that record is there, it is read directly and no model is called.

  • Exact latitude and longitude
  • The time the photo was taken
  • The camera that took it

Reading the picture itself

A vision model studies the visible scene, weighs what it sees against places it knows, and reports the closest match.

  • Works on screenshots and reposts
  • Explains which clues it used
  • Covers photos whose tags were stripped

A GPS record is evidence. A visual estimate is an estimate. Both are labelled as what they are, so you can judge the answer yourself.

THE DETAILS THAT GIVE A PLACE AWAY

What the model looks for in your photo

Small, ordinary things are what separate one street from another. These are the signals that carry the most weight.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Where was this photo taken? Questions and answers

The short version of how the answer is produced, and what it can and cannot tell you.

Can you really tell where a photo was taken?

Sometimes, and we tell you which method answered. When the camera stored GPS coordinates, they are read straight from the file and are as exact as the device recorded them. When there are none, a vision model estimates the place from what is visible and returns the clues it used — a well-reasoned guess rather than a fact. Every result is labelled so the two are easy to tell apart.

What if my photo has no location data?

That is the normal case for screenshots, reposts and photos exported by an editing app. The file is checked first, and if it carries no coordinates the picture itself is analysed: signage, architecture, road markings, vegetation and terrain are read to propose a likely place.

How close are the coordinates?

It depends on the scene. A recognisable landmark can be pinned down to the structure itself; a street with nothing distinctive may only be narrowed to a neighbourhood. Treat every AI coordinate as an estimate and confirm the surroundings on a map before you travel.

What kinds of photos work best?

Outdoor frames that keep their surroundings: a street with shopfronts, a skyline, a coastline. Wide daylight shots with readable signage help most. Close-ups of objects, heavy filters and low-light images usually leave too little to work with.

Do you keep my photo?

No. The file is read for the analysis and is not stored by this site. Photos with no GPS data are passed to the AI provider for that one step, under their own retention rules. Results are kept against your account only when you sign in.

How much does it cost to see the exact place?

The analysis itself is free to run. Where a result is locked, a one-off unlock reveals the exact place and coordinates, and there are monthly plans if you analyse photos regularly.
